‘Ammonium nitrate no threat’
Visakhapatnam, June 26 A public hearing will be conducted on ammonium nitrate storage at the warehouse of Sravan Shipping here on July 31, according to Mr G. Sambasiva Rao, Managing Director. He said at a press meet here on Thursday that till now no specific guidelines had been laid down by the AP Pollution Control Board for storage and transport of ammonium nitrate used for explosion in mines and certain types of construction activities. He said ammonium nitrate posed no threat, as it was not combustible, and there were no other hazards. “To our knowledge, it is safe enough. However, if the APPCB lays down certain norms, we will strictly follow them,” he said. He said the country needed approximately 4 lakh tonnes of ammonium nitrate per annum but there was a shortfall of roughly 2 lakh tonnes, as only two factories — one at Srikakulam in Andhra Pradesh and the other in Mumbai — were producing the nitrate. The rest was being imported and on the east coast it was being imported through Vizag and Haldia, he added.
