Hyderabad, July 26 An Assocham (Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India) study on status of Bt cotton in India has found that the Bt cotton farmers in Andhra Pradesh have gained Rs 700 crore as additional income last year.

The ‘socio-economic’ appraisal of the villages that grew cotton threw light on the improved lot of farmers. Of the 9,000 farmers the study covered, about 960 were from Andhra Pradesh, one of the biggest cotton growing States in the country.

Cut in pesticide use

The study showed that farmers in the State earned a net revenue of Rs 4,938 an acre, a benefit of 217 per cent in gross revenue.

The reduction in pesticide use was put at Rs 193 crore in 2006 because of the use of Bt cotton seeds.

Announcing the results of the study that was released here on Thursday, Mr Laveesh Bhandari of Indicus Analytics Private Ltd, and Mr Sanjiv Chaudhary, Research Director of IMRB, said the Bt cotton farmers had benefited due to the interaction with the seed provider.

Indicus and IMRB had conducted the study for the chambers early this year.

Asked about the deaths of animals that grazed on Bt cotton fields, they said it was not part of the study and that the issue was not in the picture when they conducted the study.

They claimed that women from the households that embraced Bt seeds had a higher access to maternal care. “Similarly, children from these families were found to have a higher level of immunisation compared with children from non-Bt cotton households,” they said.

They also claimed that the increase in overall yield was 50 per cent. In the case of Andhra Pradesh, it was put at 23 per cent (against 29 per cent for the South).
