Industry & Economy - Income Tax
More salaried people opting for e-filing of returns

K.R. Srivats

New Delhi, July 26 The electronic filing of income-tax returns by salaried and proprietary concerns appear to be gaining momentum, with the Tax Department so far receiving about 45,000 returns this fiscal through this route.

For salaried taxpayers, e-filing of income tax returns is optional for assessment year 2007-08.

E-filing is however mandatory for partnership firms coming under tax audit and also for corporate assessees.

Official sources said that about 10,000-15,000 returns of the 45,000 e-filed returns related to the Delhi zone.

Delhi accounts for about 18-20 per cent of the direct tax collections of the country.

In 2006-07, income-tax collections of the Centre stood at about Rs 82,500 crore.

With some more days to go for the due date (July 31) for filing of income-tax returns, the Finance Ministry expects more flow of e-filed returns by salaried and other non-mandatory category of assessees in the coming days.
