Our Bureau Chennai, July 26 Hutch (now Vodafone Hutch) is mulling over retailing re-charge coupons for prepaid subscribers through post offices in Tamil Nadu. It is also exploring the possibility of tying up with post offices to carry out verification checks necessary prior to registering for mobile connections, Mr Kumar Ramanathan, Operations Director, Hutch, Chennai and Rest of Tamil Nadu, told Business Line. He was speaking on the sidelines of a press conference announcing the company’s tie up with the Department of Posts, Tamil Nadu, to enable bill collections. MoU for bill collection
Earlier on Thursday, the company signed a memorandum of understanding with the state postal department under which Hutch subscribers can pay their phone bills at the nearest post office. Over 400 post offices, including about 200 in Chennai will offer this facility. Users can sms ‘PO’ followed by the pin code of the area they reside in to the short code 111 and get a list of post offices nearest to their locality that offer the facility. The postal department is leveraging its e-payment system for this service and currently offers the facility to other mobile operators like Airtel, Tata Tele Services and BSNL. In June 2007, over 95,000 mobile and landline bills were paid through post offices in the State, officials from the postal department said.
