Small cars

Renault is keen on a $3000 small car project as a viable competitor to the Tata’s $2,500 car, expected to be on the road by mid-2008. In India, electric cars are priced at nearly $12,500, which neither suit the middle-class pocket nor meet the needs of the richer sections.

In China, small electric cars cost around $4000, a fair price for small capacity electric cars that suit middle-class families. One wonders why entrepreneurs are shying away from developing such a product and why electric cars, that are green transport, are not exempt from excise duty of 8 per cent, which should be removed at the earliest.
