Kochi, July 27 The Kerala Government is in the process of appointing a consultant to undertake a feasibility study for setting up a Defence Industrial Park in the State.

The park will be set up exclusively for manufacturing Defence products, said Mr Elamaram Kareem, State Industries Minister.

Speaking to newspersons on Friday, the Minister said that the Government is eyeing a bigger share of the Rs 30,000-crore Defence components market in the country.

Three locations in Palakkad, Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram districts have been identified for the purpose.

Though the Government has acquired around 200 acres in Palakkad, it is yet to acquire suitable land in the other two districts, he added.

The Minister, who was here to attend the valedictory function of a two-day Defence Industry seminar, said that the Government had invited State-owned PSUs and private industries from the State and outside to set up units. Besides land, the Government would extend help to set up common facilities such as R&D. Mr Kareem said that Kerala’s share in producing various products and components for the Defence sector was only 0.1 per cent.
