Events States - Tamil Nadu Bharat Krishak Samaj meet on Cauvery basin irrigation
G. Gurumurthy Coimbatore, July 29 A farmers meet under the aegis of the Bharat Krishak Samaj to discuss the fall in farm economy of the Cauvery basin agriculture will be held in Tiruchi on August 3, 2007. The one-day meet will also discuss the problems related to irrigation management practices and also ecological degradations facing the ayacuts in the Cauvery basin. The meet, supported by different regional farmer bodies from Tiruchi, Thanjavur, Salem, and Erode including the Cauvery delta farmers associations, is expected to be attended by over 40 delegates and farmer-leaders representing the interests of Cauvery basin farmers, according to Mr C. Vyapuri, President of the United Farmers Association. Labour shortage
Mr Vyapuri said that his association had wanted the forthcoming district collectors conference being convened by the State Government to urgently take on its agenda the acute labour short supply the farming sector in the State was facing that has threatened to dislocate ‘seasonal’ raising of crops. The farmer-leader also called upon the Government to issue a common appeal to all the political parties, to dissuade them from organising mass public movements involving farmers from rural pockets for any political purpose till the ‘Samba’ harvest is completed in the State.
