Mangalore excise collection at Rs 3,913 cr in 2006-07

Target for current fiscal put at Rs 3,950 cr

Mangalore, July 30 The Mangalore Central Excise Commissionerate collected Rs 3,913 crore of Central Excise duty during 2006-07 as against the target of Rs 2,985 crore for the period.

Addressing presspersons here on Monday, Mr M. Ajit Kumar, Commissioner of Mangalore Central Excise Commissionerate, said that the target for the current fiscal is Rs 3,950 crore.

As many as four companies contributed more than Rs 10 crore of Central Excise duty during the previous fiscal. Of them, Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) topped the list with a contribution of Rs 3,691 crore. Of the total excise duty collection of the Commissionerate, 94 per cent was contributed by MRPL.

The Mangalore Commissionerate collected an excise duty of Rs 3,459.72 crore during 2005-06 and Rs 2,453.97 crore during 2004-05.

Customs collection

During 2006-07, the Commissionerate collected Rs 600.35 crore of customs duty against the target of Rs 590 crore. The target for the current financial year is Rs 840 crore, he said.

Mr Kumar said that seven new services have been notified as taxable services with effect from June 1. The Mangalore Commissionerate is embarking on a three-phase programme to create awareness among the assessees about these services.

In the first phase, assessees will be educated about the new services. Spot registration of assessees will be conducted in divisional offices of Mangalore Service Tax and of Udupi on August 2 and 3. The survey of the assessees will be conducted in the final phase, he added.
