Social Security States - Karnataka ID cards for beedi workers
Our Bureau Mangalore, July 30 Beedi workers may soon get identity cards from their respective village panchayats, if the proposal mooted at the Parliamentary Consultative Committee materialises. Laying the foundation stone for the office building of Regional Directorate of Central Board for Workers Education (CBWE) in Mangalore on Monday, Mr Oscar Fernandes, Union Minister of State for Labour, said that there was a proposal at the recent Parliamentary Consultative Committee to provide identity cards for beedi workers at panchayats. Currently, a contractor employing beedi workers is authorised to give identity cards to them. Some of the contractors do not do so. Identity cards will help in getting the social security schemes of the Government, Mr Fernandes pointed out. On the National Rural Employment Guarantee (NREG) scheme, he said it has been implemented in 330 districts in the country. The Government intends to implement this scheme in all the villages. He said 93 per cent of the workers in the country are in unorganised sector and the Government is making all efforts to provide social security to them.
