Mangalore, July 30 Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) has been awarded the ‘Jawaharlal Nehru Centenary Award for Energy Performance of Refineries’ for 2006-07, by the Centre of High Technology, Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.

A company release said here that this award, which is in recognition of a refinery’s annual energy performance, is decided after all refineries are evaluated by an awards committee for their specific energy consumption.

Quoting Mr R. Rajamani, Managing Director of MRPL, the release said: “A reduced energy index reflects not only optimum energy consumption but also reduced operational cost overheads.”

MRPL’s ‘encon number’ (energy consumption number) for 2006-07 is 63.57 mbn (million British thermal units/barrel/NRGF) – the lowest amongst all refineries, the release said.
