Pawar defends wheat imports

Hyderabad, July 31

Mr Sharad Pawar, Union Agriculture Minister, has strongly defended the Centre’s decision to import wheat at a higher cost.

Addressing newspersons here on Tuesday, he said it was important to build a substantial buffer in order to ensure food security.

Mr Pawar was here in connection with a review meeting on agriculture that was attended by the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh and the Deputy Chairman of Planning Commission, Mr Montek Singh Ahluwalia. “We have enough stocks for distribution through public distribution systems. But we want to build a buffer stock. It is important to have a buffer stock to ensure food security of common man in case we are hit by drought,” he said.

He indicated that the imports would continue despite high costs in order to ensure food security.

Reacting to the question on the stark difference between the wheat price in local markets and the price of imported wheat, he said, the Government had increased the support price by Rs 120 (including a bonus of Rs 20) a quintal as against just Rs 10 during the NDA Government.
