‘Steel Ministry to conduct study on HR’

Kolkata, July 31 The Union Ministry of Steel has asked the Indian Institute of Metals (IIM) to conduct a study on the human resources that would be required to meet the demands of the growing domestic steel industry. The study is expected to be ready within the next six months, according to Mr B. Muthuraman, Managing Director of Tata Steel and outgoing President of IIM.

Addressing a news conference here, Mr Muthuraman said the report would focus on the country’s future requirement of metallurgists and people engaged in material sciences. Besides engaging students and researchers, IIM was also keeping on its radar industry-academia interface in adequate measure.

Mr Muthuraman said two regional centres of excellence were being set up at Kalpakkam in Chennai and Jamshedpur with a view to making youngsters “more interested in metallurgy and allied sciences”. At a later date, such centres could be set up at other places as well.

“The future of India lies in manufacturing, mining, minerals – both ferrous and non-ferrous – steel, etc. As such, it is important to get our youth involved in metallurgy and mineral sciences, among other things”, he said, and added that “no large country in the world can grow without manufacturing”.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Srikumar Banerjee, Director of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre and incoming President of IIM, said materials and energy together form the core of the manufacturing sector.

However, to convert them into manufactured products, one requires appropriate human resources. Hence, the focus of IIM on generation of appropriate human resources keeping in view the growing demand for the same.

Mr Sanak Mishra, Vice-President, Arcelor Mittal and CEO of Mittal Steel India, felt that India must generate more mining engineers, metallurgists and material scientists to ensure that advancement of the country is not hindered.
