Kolkata, July 31

The first phase of Mittal Steel India’s proposed plant in Orissa is likely to go on stream by 2011, according to Dr Sanak Mishra, Vice-President, Acrelor-Mittal, and CEO of Mittal Steel India.

Speaking to newspersons on the sidelines of the 61st annual general meeting of the Indian Institute of Metals here on Tuesday, Dr Mishra said first phase of the six million-tonne capacity steel project in Orissa may go on stream in 2011.

The second phase of an additional six mt would be implemented thereafter. The detailed report of the project — including the power project, logistics and power plant — is expected to be ready within the next 15 months. He said Mittal Steel India was hopeful of leveraging upon the synergies of the group (read Arcelor-Mittal) while implementing the project, which will manufacture both long and flat products.

With regard to the proposed steel plant in Jharkhand, Dr Mishra said the schedule of implementation would be firmed up once the rehabilitation and resettlement policy of the State Government is finalised.
