Urban Development States - Maharashtra Remaking of Mumbai signs pact with US NGO
Our Bureau Mumbai, Aug. 1 Professing a self-generating profit model for planned development of the Mumbai city involving stakeholders and the Government, the Remaking of Mumbai Federation (RoMF) said it was imperative that the city went vertical to decongest. RoMF, is an association of stakeholders and eminent personalities working for planned development of the city. The federation has submitted a plan to the Maharashtra Government, seeking additional floor space index (FSI) for rebuilding dilapidated buildings, numbering over 20,000, be increased four times their area so that more open spaces are available to residents. Pact signed
To bring in international expertise to the initiative, it has signed an MoU with the US-based Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) to collectively draw a roadmap for concept, design and implementation of the redevelopment process. CTBUH is a non-profit organisation that combines various disciplines involved in creating urban environment on a global basis. Since 1969, it has actively created and shared new knowledge on tall buildings and their growing impact on the urban areas, said Mr Lalit Gandhi, Chairman of RoMF. Reconstruction
Mr Gandhi pointed out to the number of building collapses and loss of lives during the rains and said rehabilitation and reconstruction, with priority on infrastructure load, need to be addressed alongside the welfare of the stakeholders such as tenants, landlords and slum-dwellers. The Government too had a pivotal role as a service-provider of civic amenities and public transport. In any case, issues such as transit accommodation, rehabilitation and infrastructure could be taken care of only by a self-generating model through provision of higher FSI.
