Hyderabad, Aug. 1 Dr S. Shivaji, Director-Grade Scientist of CCMB (Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology), has been selected as a Member of India’s first expedition to the Arctic, the northern end of the earth.

The Government of India has decided to send a delegation of five scientists lead by Mr Rasik Ravindra, Director, National Centre for Antarctica and Ocean Research (NCAOR), Goa.

The other members of the team include Dr S.N. Singh (NCAOR); Mr C.G. Deshpande of Indian Institute of Tropical Management (IITM), Pune; and Dhruv Sen Singh, a young geologist, from the University of Lucknow.

Dr Shivaji had travelled to Antarctica, the southern end of the earth, twice and discovered several new species of microbes.

He wants to explore the possibility of using Arctic microbes as workhorses of biotechnology, a press release from CCMB here said.
