The best way to lure tourists is by tempting their tastebuds, according to the Tourism Department of Malaysia.
Malaysia will now encourage local entrepreneurs to open Malay ethnic food outlets in India to indirectly woo more tourists to its lovely destinations back home.
The initiative is part of the nation’s global strategy to attract more tourists.
According to Mr Mohammed Rosly Selamat, COO of Pempena, the marketing and event organisation agency for the Ministry of Tourism, Indian entrepreneurs would be encouraged in the form of training, advice and financial assistance to open eateries that offer Malay food.
“We are also open to forging joint ventures with individual entrepreneurs in this regard,” he added.
He was in the city in connection with the launch of Awana, a Malaysian eatery.
There are about 400 Malaysian restaurants around the globe.
“We have targeted that the number should go up to 3,000 by 2010 and 8,000 by 2015,” a senior Malaysian Government official told Business Line.
Explaining the rationale behind spreading a liking for the Malaysian cuisine, the official said: “One of the best ways to attract tourists to our country is to introduce our food. This we call is gastronomical tourism.”
Tourists from India have been showing tremendous interest in Malaysia as a tourist destination.
“Last year, tourist arrivals from India were put at 2.70 lakh against 2.22 lakh in the previous year,” Mr Selamat said.
