Kolkata Aug. 1 Satellite mapping of all small tea gardens (less than 25 acres) in Assam and West Bengal will be completed by end 2007; and by early 2008, the complete land use map of all tea gardens will be ready. Systematic remote sensing technology was first used for location of extensive ground water resources, and then extended to mapping of wastelands, helping to develop State-wise wasteland maps.

Tea would now be the fourth area of application of satellite imagery after ground water resources, wasteland development and mapping changes in forest cover improvement. It is learnt that such remote sensing would also be extended to other cash crop plantations like coffee and rubber.

Mr Jairam Ramesh, Union Minister of State for Commerce, told Business Line that the remote sensing facility of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), at Kharagpur, will be executing the project in collaboration with Tea Board. H e said Rs 5 crore would be spent on the project during the 11th Plan.

The project will involve continuous mapping of the plantation area, and relay of instantaneous feedback to respective stations on spread of plant diseases, pest attacks etc.
