Our Bureau
Coimbatore, Aug. 1 The special court trying the accused charged in the sensational serial bomb blasts, which rocked this industrial city on February 14, 1998, on Wednesday found 153 persons including Mr S.A. Bhasha, leader of the banned Muslim fundamentalist outfit Al-Umma guilty.
Pronouncing its verdict at the end of five years of trial proceedings, the Sessions Judge of the Special Court, Mr K. Uthirapathy, set free a key accused and the Kerala-based People’s Democratic Party leader, Mr Abdul Nasser Madhani, along with seven others saying the charges against them were not proved.
Mr Madhani was absolved of all the five charges by the court including criminal conspiracy.
Of the 153 found guilty, the court had held that 70 are found guilty under Section 120B of IPC (criminal conspiracy) and, hence, would receive the maximum punishment, while 83 others were held guilty for other charges.
The court has staggered sentencing of the accused found guilty which would be taken up in its next sittings on August 6 and 16.
In all, 166 persons including Mr S.A. Bhasha, were facing charges of involvement in the crime under various sections of IPC.
