Jute Government - Agricultural Policy Jute packaging order extended
New Delhi, Aug. 2 The Centre has extended the compulsory packaging of foodgrains and sugar in jute bags for another year till June 30, 2008, with significant modifications. While the general policy of 100 per cent packaging of foodgrains and sugar in jute bags would continue, the Union Ministry of Textiles has, however, been empowered to authorise user agencies to relax these provisions up to a maximum of 20 per cent "in case of any disruption in supplies". The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), which met here on Thursday, also decided to exempt small consumer packs of 25 kg and below and exports packaging in respect of sugar and foodgrains from the operation of compulsory packaging under the Jute Packaging Material Act, 1987. Similarly, sugar fortified with vitamins and packaging in 100 kg or more have also been exempted from the purview of mandatory jute packaging. - Our Bureau
