Bosch to supply CRDi systems for Rs 1-lakh car

Tata Motors plans four more manufacturing plants

K. Giriprakash

Nashik, Aug. 2 Bosch will supply its common rail diesel injection systems (CRDi) to the Tata Motors’ Rs 1-lakh small car. Disclosing this at the roll out of the indigenously developed injectors for CRDi systems, the German ambassador, Mr Bernd Muetzelburg, said that this development marks the strengthening of the Indo-German co-operation.

He said the entire world is awaiting the launch of the Rs 1-lakh small car. “We are happy that a German company Bosch will be part of this project as it will be supplying CRDi systems for the car,” he said. Both Bosch as well as Tata Motors did not react to the announcement made by the German ambassador. The Rs 1-lakh small car expected to have an engine capacity of 660cc will be rolled out sometime next year, sources familiar with the development of the car said.

Manufacturing Plants

Sources said that the diesel version of the small car may be launched after the roll out of the petrol driven car. The price of the small car may also be higher by about Rs 25,000 by the time it is launched, sources said.

Tata Motors’ Managing Director, Mr Ravi Kanth, said that his company plans to set up four more manufacturing plants soon. He said one of these plants will be based out of South India and will be used for manufacturing buses and trucks

The others will be in Uttaranchal with a capacity to produce 2.5-lakh cars, another in West Bengal which will be for small cars with a capacity of 2.5-lakh units and one more will be in Ranjangaon with a capacity to produce 1-lakh cars.

Earlier, the Mico-Bosch Managing Director, Dr Albert Hieronimus, in a presentation to the media said that the auto parts’ maker is trying to make affordable CRDi systems for smaller engines.

“The biggest challenge is the air management in the system,” he said.

He expects the share of diesel run passenger cars in the domestic market to grow by 15 per cent to about 45 per cent by 2012.
