‘IISc can become future Stanford’

Preethi. J

Bangalore, Aug. 2 “Bangalore’s Indian Institute of Science can become the Stanford of tomorrow,” believes Prof Krishna C. Saraswat, Ricky/Nielson Professor of Engineering, Department of Electrical Engineering, Stanford University.

Prof Saraswat, who was in the city to receive a lifetime award for his work in the semiconductor industry, said: “IISc has the culture of Stanford and Bangalore is the right place at the right time. Bangalore can be a hub of researchers and follow the model of Silicon Valley.”

IISc will be celebrating its centenary next year. It is the only Indian university that is ranked in top 20 by World Education Report. California-based Stanford University has spawned people who have changed the world: founders of Hewlett Packard, SUN Microsystems, Yahoo and Google.

Trade bodies like India Semiconductor Association and VLSI Society of India organised an awards show, which were presented by Dr R. Chidambaram, Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government. Prof Jagdish Kumar, Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi received the ISA-VSI TechnoMentor award; IIT Madras and IIT Kharagpur were joint recipients of the TechnoShield award; NIT Kurukshetra and Mr Syam Sundar Reddy of IIT Madras received the TechnoInventor award for outstanding postgraduate and doctoral research thesis.
