Centralised storage of fingerprints proposed

Our Bureau

Mumbai, Aug 2 An expert committee on standards for raw images of fingerprints, appointed by the Reserve Bank of India, has recommended centralised storage of raw images of fingerprints in a specified format so that they can easily be retrieved when needed.

Currently, fingerprints of customers are stored in biometric cards, which lose some information over a period of time.

The centralised storage of the digitalised data of raw images would also help when a particular technology becomes outdated or when a new technology is put in place.

Bankers are of the opinion that it would save time, as they would not have to go back to the customer to get fresh fingerprints.

“Storing the raw image of the fingerprint in a centralised location based on some fixed standards would enable banks to retrieve the information when required,” said a senior bank official.

In its report on standards for digitalised storage of fingerprints, the committee has recommended some standard procedures and minimum requirements of image acquisition to be adopted.

It has also recommended the use of at least two fingers, preferably both index fingers, for the purpose of image taking.

However, it left this decision to the discretion of banks.

The committee said that its defined standards would ensure that the storage of raw images of fingerprints would conform to international standards.
