Urban Development Government - Politics States - Andhra Pradesh Uproar over plan to sell Vizag hill lands
Our Bureau Visakhapatnam, Aug. 3 The proposal of the Greater Visakha Municipal Corporation (GVMC) to sell lands on the hill slopes of Kapparada and Yarada to garner funds necessary for implementing the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) has come in for widespread criticism from different sections and political parties. Schemes worth Rs 1,200 crore have been accorded administrative sanction under the JNNURM for Visakhapatnam city and the GVMC would have to provide 30 per cent of the funds as matching grant for the schemes. To get the funds, the GVMC is proposing to sell lands on these hills and the Opposition parties as well as the citizen groups are stiffly opposed to the proposal. The remaining 70 per cent would be provided by the Union Government under the JNNURM. Mr Ch. Narasinga Rao, the district secretary of the CPI(M), says, “These hills along with the Bay of Bengal contribute to much of the charm of Vizag. “They are crucial for maintaining the ecological balance and the urban poor have settled there. The GVMC has no business to sell these lands. “The corporation has to search for other sources to provide the matching grant for the JNNURM schemes. “The statements of the Mayor, Mr P. Janardhana Rao, and the Deputy Mayor, Mr Dorabbai, on the proposed sale of lands on Kapparada hill slope are highly irresponsible. We will oppose any such move tooth and nail.”
