Plantations Fall in dry beans content hits cocoa prices
Aravindan Kottayam, Aug. 3 Cocoa prices are ruling low following the drop in the percentage of dry beans. Prices have fallen to Rs 18-18.50 from Rs 22-24 a kg that prevailed before the onset of monsoon. Following severe rains in Kerala, the percentage of dry beans is now only 21-22 as against 28 obtained earlier. But arrivals to the market are better. As the monsoon continues, the water content in wet beans is high and hence the percentage of dry beans is reported to be very low. Inter cropping
Meanwhile, as part of the efforts to extend the area under cocoa, Cadbury’s and the Tamil Nadu Horticultural Department have entered into an agreement to plant cocoa as an inter crop in coconut gardens. During the next five years, cocoa would be planted in 50,000 acres as per the agreement. The growers would get an additional income of Rs 80 crore from this. In Tamil Nadu, nine lakh acres are under coconut cultivation. By inter cropping cocoa in coconut gardens, one tonne of cocoa seeds could be produced from 2.25 acres.
