Agri-Biz & Commodities - Rubber
Supply fears dominate spot rubber market

Aravindan

Kottayam, Aug. 3 Spot rubber improved on Friday. The market sentiments were dominated by supply concerns and the prices firmed up amidst extremely thin volumes. RSS 4 closed better at Rs 90 and Rs 89.50 a kg against Rs 88.50 and Rs 89 a kg respectively at Kottayam and Kochi as covering groups continued to offer better quotes for the meagre arrivals. According to market circles, certain tyre companies were buyers on sheet rubber at the prevailing levels but they kept a low profile.

Futures weak

The rubber futures turned weak possibly on profit booking at higher levels. On NMCE, the August contract declined to Rs 89.16 (89.29) September to Rs 84.28 (84.81), October to Rs 81.90 (82.41) and November contract to Rs 81.30 (81.94) per kg for RSS 4. The August contract for the grade moved down to Rs 87.32 (87.89) a kg on MCX.

Spot prices were (Rs/kg): RSS-4: 90 (88.50); RSS-5: 87 (86.50); ungraded: 86 (84.50); ISNR 20: 87.50 (86) and latex 60 per cent: 60 (60).
