Alliances & Joint Ventures DaimlerChrysler looks for potential partners in India
Our Bureau Pune, Aug. 3 Dr Wilfried Aulbur, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, DaimlerChrysler India Pvt Ltd (DCIL), has stated that the company is looking at the Indian market and potential partners for the opportunities that it offers in the commercial vehicle segment. Answering a query from Business Line, he said, “Currently, the truck group is represented in the Indian market through limited imports of the Mercedes-Benz Actros. The declared objective of the DaimlerChrysler Truck Group has been and continues to be to substantially enter the Indian market, which has been — besides China — highest priority for us. We are currently examining different options and are in discussion with various potential partners in India.” DCIL has entered the market with two variants, the Actros 4040K and Actros 4840K, aimed at the mining segment of the commercial vehicle business, which currently has a market of around 800 units per annum. The Actros is available in a completely built imported chassis with a 12-litre engine. Parting ways
It may also be recalled that Tata Motors, also a player in the commercial vehicle segment, and DCIL have parted ways after 50 years of partnership. Tata had entered into a know-how joint venture with DCIL in 1954 for the production of trucks. Auto analysts point out that DCIL has obtained a ‘no-objection certificate’ from Tata Motors to manufacture commercial vehicles in India. They noted that DCIL is also planning to assemble semi-knocked down trucks in future. It may also be recalled that the new site of DCIL in Chakan has also allotted a certain portion for the production of trucks. DCIL has entered the domestic market in the truck segment with its completely knocked down units and has sold around 50 trucks during the last year.
