Reservoir levels above average

New Delhi, Aug. 3

A more-than-satisfactory monsoon so far has resulted in water levels in major reservoirs of the country currently being 65 per cent higher than the average for the last ten years. As on August 2, the 78 major reservoirs monitored by the Central Water Commission (CWC) has a total live storage of 78.650 billion cubic metres (BCM). This is 24.1 per cent more than the 63.358 BCM recorded for the same date last year and 65.3 per cent over the corresponding 10-year-average (1997 -2006) of 47.588 BCM. Out of the 78 reservoirs, in as many as 70, the current live storage levels are 80 per cent or more of the last ten-year average. In four others, water levels are ruling between 50 and 80 per cent of the 10-year average, while being between 30 and 50 per cent in the case of three reservoirs. Only in one project — Sriramsagar in Andhra Pradesh — there has been no live storage at all. —
