Management Productivity on wheels
Our Bureau Chennai, Aug. 4 Even avoidable movement of workers is ‘muda’, Japanese for ‘waste’, says Mr Taiichi Ohno, the guru who devised and practiced the Toyota Production System, the original of today’s ‘lean management’. Movements lead to drudgery, drudgery leads to loss of productivity. The Coimbatore-based garment manufacturer, K P R Mill Ltd, whose initial public offering is currently open, has found a novel way of killing this ‘muda’. It has provided its employees with roller-skates and all the intra-shop floor movements of its predominantly women staff are on wheels! These girls, who often have to change a spindle here or a thread there, just skate around the shop floor. Sweepers glide down the aisles while on work. The company’s Managing Director, Mr P. Nataraj, said workers take only a third of the time they would otherwise for the same level of intra-shop floor movements.
