Perot Systems scans healthcare space

‘An acquisition can speed up entry into local market’

While Perot is evaluating various opportunities, it has not yet “found a suitable target” for takeover.

Moumita Bakshi Chatterjee

New Delhi, Aug. 5 The $2.4-billion global major Perot Systems is looking for an acquisition in the healthcare IT space in India in a bid to gain a foothold in the domestic market. It has initiated talks with healthcare providers for IT outsourcing contracts.

“Healthcare will be our major foray in servicing the Indian market. While we currently leverage Indian capabilities to serve our global clients, an acquisition can speed up our entry into the local market to serve local clients,” Mr Michael McClaskey, Chief Information Officer and Vice-President, Infrastructure Solutions, Perot Systems, told Business Line.

Local knowledge

Mr McClaskey said that the company may look at acquisitions that bring along with it local knowledge in the healthcare space.

He said that while Perot was evaluating various opportunities, it had not yet “found a suitable target” for takeover.

Perot Systems, in July 2003, had announced the acquisition of Vision Healthsource although the buyout was primarily aimed at strengthening IT services for the US market.

“As far as targeting Indian clients is concerned, we will offer IT services such as application development and maintenance, infrastructure management and also back-office support.

Compelling reason

The size of the healthcare market here is a compelling reason for us to look at the market in India,” he said.

Perot Systems employs close to 7,000 professionals in India spread across locations such as Bangalore, Coimbatore, Chennai, and Noida.

“We are also evaluating Tier-II cities for expansion now. We have started operations in Pune,” he said.

Perot has 300 professionals in Coimbatore, 3,000 in Chennai, 1,700 Bangalore and 40 in Pune. Noida is its largest site in India, with close to 3,500 employees at the location.
