Education States - Kerala CII to upgrade ITIs in Kerala
Our Bureau Kochi, Aug 6 As part of its initiatives to develop skills and employability, the Confederation of Indian Industry (Southern Region) has identified 13 ITIs in Kerala for upgrading. This is being done as part of the new initiatives announced by the Finance Minister in his Budget speech allocating Rs750 crore for upgrading 300 ITIs in the country, Mr Pardipta K. Mohapatra, Chairman, CII-SR and President and CEO of RPG Enterprises, said. The CII Task Force on Affirmative Action and Skill Development would work in the areas of skill development, engaging companies on affirmative action and specifically on the project for making ITIs as Centres of Excellence in Kerala, he said. CII also initiated steps to train SC/ST youth in Kerala on vocational skills in 2007-08. He said that the southern region would undertake a visioning exercise for the region showcase and replicate their best practices in the development for tier II and tier III cites, innovation, tourism, agro and agro-based industries and livelihood enhancement. The key focus of CII this year would be on skills development and employability, affirmative action, promotion of sustainable cities and corporate social responsibility initiatives across the region. CII would work on a visioning process for each of the southern States, focussing on their success stories in association with leading consulting firms such as PWC, ICRA and renowned management education institutions such as IIM-B. He also said that CII would be setting up of an Urban Kerala Mission for City development. CII is keen to work for industrialisation of North Kerala that is currently lagging behind in development, he added.
