Our Bureau Coimbatore, Aug. 6 A ‘TCS-Sponsored Research Programme’ in Computer Science and Information Technology has been instituted at the PSG College of Technology here. An agreement to this effect was signed by the TCS Executive Vice-President, Global Human Resources. Mr. S. Padmanabhan, and PSG Principal, Mr. R. Rudhramoorthy. The signatories to the agreement said the four-year PG programme leading to doctoral research would strive at creating a talent pool of high calibre to propel the country further in the global IT arena. ‘We will commence the programme before end-August, with a batch of 10 research scholars,’ Mr. Rudramoorthy said. (It is yet to advertise/invite applications). Prospective candidates would have to pass a written test and interview to qualify for admission. The sponsors plan to pay each candidate a stipend of Rs 8,000/month during the first year of the programme and thereafter enhance it by Rs 2,000 to Rs 10,000/month in the second year and to Rs 12,000/month for the last two years. “Meritorious candidates would be selected by the institution with our support. We will support ‘not interfere’ in the structuring of the programme,” Mr Padmanabhan said. Stressing the need for such an initiative, he said “present day students are lured by the industry package that not many opt for research. We need to break away from linear models. We need people with better management and productivity tools. Such initiatives hopefully, would help us build a research pool. The future of technology would be in the area of grid computing and utility computing. It is, therefore, necessary to build basics in such areas,” he said. TCS has similar tie-ups with IIT- Mumbai for a research programme in VLSI, with IIT- Chennai on Computational Engineering and IIT-Kanpur for a research programme in Electronics Design. “We are looking at institutes outside India too. We are in talks with the University of San Diego for a programme on Video in Motion,” Mr Padmanabhan said.
