Fertilisers States - Andhra Pradesh Steps afoot to speed up urea import
Our Bureau Visakhapatnam, Aug. 6 All steps are being taken to speed up urea import and distribution this kharif season to avoid the scarcity witnessed last year, said the Union Secretary (Fertilisers), Mr J. Sridhar Sarma. He was speaking at a function in the port here on Sunday evening after the inauguration of the warehouse of the Indian Potash Ltd (IPL). He said one-fourth of the urea required in the country was being imported and coordinated efforts were required for importing it, bagging it and taking it to the district headquarters. Logistics posed a big problem, he said. Mr Sarma complimented IPL for constructing the warehouse with a capacity of 30,000 tonnes in a record time of six months. Focus on imports
Mr Vivek Sahai, Additional Member of the Railway Board, said bigger vessels would facilitate timely import of urea for both kharif and rabi seasons. Mr Vijay Chibber, Joint Secretary in the Department of Fertilisers, said the focus this year was on imports in advance to avoid scarcity. Mr P.S. Gahlaut, Managing Director of IPL, said scarcity of storage space and lack of mechanical bagging facilities had been identified as the critical factors impeding fertiliser import. A mechanical bagging plant had been set up at Paradip port and, if it proved successful, another one may be set up at Vizag too, he said. Mr K. Ratna Kishore, Chairman of Vizag Port, said the request of the IPL for more land would be placed before the board on August 18. He said an additional railway yard would be set up in the port.
