‘Investors have failed to provide job avenues to locals’

Mr Pawan Kumar Chamling

Sarikah Atreya

Gangtok, Aug. 6 The Sikkim Chief Minister, Mr Pawan Chamling, has expressed his dissatisfaction over the failure of investors in Sikkim to towards providing adequate employment opportunities to local people

Addressing an investors meet held here today, Mr Chamling regretted the fact that despite the tax concessions and subsidies provided by the State Government, investors had “failed to help the State Government in providing employment opportunities to the locals.”

“The State Government is fully assisting in setting up industries in the State by declaring areas in different places as industrial zones. We are providing investors with all the facilities. We offer them peace and tranquillity, clean water, clean air, law and order, an investor friendly government and a conducive environment to carry out business without any hindrance and obstruction. However, these industrial units have not been appointing local people which would have relieved pressure on the State Government to tackle growing unemployment. I am very unhappy with this trend,” Mr Chamling said.

Besides the power developers, the State has a lot of activity in areas such as banking, pharmaceutical units, hotels, tours and travel operators, hospitality services, transportation, health and education.

The Chief Minister rued the fact that most private banks, pharmaceutical companies, breweries and distilleries and the hospitality industry set up in the State had not fulfilled their commitments towards “safeguarding Sikkim’s interests.” “This is not acceptable to us,” he said.

Mr Chamling said that since there was no dearth of training institutes in the State, investors should select local candidates and adequately train and then recruit them.
