Ashok Leyland July sales down 19.5 %

Our Bureau

Chennai, Aug 6 Ashok Leyland sold 3,391 goods carriers in July, about 20 per cent lower than 4,208 sold in the same period last year.

The goods segment sales for the month were also lower than in the previous month (3,973 units).

The company has been saying that it believes that the current slowdown in goods vehicles sales is more due to postponement of purchases, on the hope that interest rates will fall, rather than availability of freight, but apparently those purchases are yet to happen in full swing.

Passenger vehicles up

However, sales of passenger vehicles continued to soar. The company sold 1,621 buses (745), but fewer than 1,791 units sold in June.

Overall, including exports, Ashok Leyland sold 5,574 vehicles (5,231) and 6,510 in June.

During the April-July period, the company sold 23,737 vehicles (22,271).

A notable feature of sales has been the continued surge in exports, despite the appreciation of the rupee.

The company exported 540 vehicles (261) in July 2006 and 694 in June.

In the first four months of the current year, the company has exported 1,964 vehicles (1,505).

The company has a policy of borrowing in foreign currency as much as it earns from exports.
