Retailing States - Karnataka Mangalore merchants body opposes retail cos’ entry
Our Bureau Mangalore, Aug. 7 Concerned over the proposed entry of big retail players to the markets in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, the Mangalore-based Central Market Merchants’ Association has called for a trade bandh on August 13. Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, Mr Hameed Kandak, association general secretary, said that nearly 5,000 small vendors coming under the limits of Mangalore City Corporation earn their livelihood by selling vegetables, fruits, flowers and other items. Several daily wage earners and other labourers are dependent on these vendors to meet their daily requirements. Mr Kandak said that the proposed entry will affect the interests of these vendors and labourers. Trade bandh
As a mark of protest, the vendors will observe a trade bandh on August 13. Vendors from Central Market in Mangalore, and other markets such as Surathkal, Kankanady, Jeppu, Bejai and Urva will participate in the bandh. They will take out a procession from the Central Market to the office of the Deputy Commissioner and submit a memorandum opposing the entry of major retail players, he added.
