Hyderabad, Aug 7 The BM Birla Science Centre is planning to expand its focus on research in information technology and other areas.

“In IT and associated fields very little is being done currently on the R&D front. We will be expanding our research focus by having some dedicated research scholars at our centre here,” Mr B.G. Sidharth, Director-General, BM Birla Science Centre, told reporters at the launch of its upgraded portal of the centre here on Tuesday.

Currently, the centre has tied up with universities in the European Union for conducting research programmes. “We have seven research scholars. Six of them are in the Europe now on research programmes while one scholar is here. We want to increase the number of research scholars here by adding eight more initially,” Mr Sidharth said.

Centres in tier II towns

The process of setting up science centres in tier II towns such as Vijayawada, Vemulawada, Rajahmundry in Andhra Pradesh and some other town in Chhattisgarh and Gujarat was on, he said, adding: “Our objective is to take science to a layman.”

The re-launched portal of the centre, www.birlasciencecentre.org, has many advanced, high-speed animated features on the Dinosauriam being set by the centre, archaeology museum, basic science. “For the last 22 years, we have been conducting many scientific events to touch all sections of the society. Our Web site will chronicle all these activities,” he explained.

The portal would soon be upgraded to incorporate scientific and technical features on archaeology and cosmos, he added.

Excavation

Ms Nirmala Birla, President of Birla Archaeological and Cultural Research Institute, formally launched the Web site. Responding to a query, she said the institute had to stop taking up collaborative archaeological excavation projects due to “complete non-cooperation” from the Government. The institute had earlier taken up excavations in Madhya Pradesh and undersea excavations in Dwaraka, Gujarat.

The centre would be organising the sixth Indo-Italian workshop on ‘IT in Education, Research and Industry’ in collaboration with the Italian Embassy and the University of Udine, Italy on August 30 and 31, Mr Sidharth said.
