Courts/Legal Issues - Leather Nike asked to produce copy of contract with BCCI
Our Bureau New Delhi, Aug. 7 In the ongoing proceedings of the Adidas versus Nike case in the Monopolies and Restrictive Trade Practices Commission, the court today asked Nike to produce a copy of its agreement with the cricket body BCCI. Adidas had moved the Commission alleging that its competitor Nike was indulging in unfair trade practice by using the endorsement by Sachin Tendulkar on Nike products. It said that Sachin Tendulkar entered into an exclusive contract from February 16, 2004 to February 15, 2009 for endorsing Adidas’s merchandise. In the arguments today, the Adidas counsel said that the contention of Nike to legitimately use the endorsement by way of its agreement with the cricket body is invalid as the BCCI has not entered into individual contracts with players. The Adidas counsel also claimed that Nike was not an official sponsor of the Indian cricket team as per the BCCI’s records. “As per the documents, Sahara India Airlines is the official sponsor of the Indian cricket team,” the Adidas counsel said. Adidas submitted to the Commission its contract with Sachin Tendulkar. The matter would come up for hearing again next week.
