15% growth in cargo handling by major ports

T.E. Raja Simhan

Chennai, Aug. 7

The 12 major ports recorded a 15 per cent growth in cargo handling to 164 million tonnes during April to July when compared with 143 million tonnes for the corresponding period last year.

The ports, however, missed the target of 169 million tonnes set by the Shipping Ministry.

Except Mormugao, the rest 11 ports reported a positive growth in the first four months of the fiscal.

Only four ports – Chennai, Kandla, JNPT and New Mangalore – surpassed the Ministry’s target, according to tentative numbers released by the Indian Port Association.

Kandla reported a 37 per cent growth in cargo handling in the first four months to 20.8 million tonnes (15 million tonnes); Visakhapatnam was a close second with 20.6 million tonnes (17 million tonnes) and Chennai third with 19 million tonnes (17 million tonnes).

Among the major cargo handled, POL saw an 18 per cent growth to 55 million; iron ore had 5 per cent growth to 27 million and thermal coal saw an 18 per cent increase to 14 million.
