Our Bureau Bangalore, Aug. 8 The Karnataka Government will come out with an “aggressive” apparel export promotion policy and spend Rs 500 crore over five years to give a lift to the garment industry in the State, said Mr Ashok Kumar Manoli, Commissioner of Textiles, Karnataka. On the sidelines of the inauguration of the 13th South India Garment Fair, Mr Manoli said apparel exports are the “fastest growing” segment in the textile industry in the State, especially Bangalore. “The target is to achieve an export turnover of Rs 10,000 crore by 2010 from around Rs 6,000 crore last year,” he said. The policy will provide incentives and set up institutions to benefit those involved in garment manufacturing. The garment sector in the State employs around five lakh people, about 80 per cent of them are women. Garment fair
The three-day garment fair, organised by the South India Garment Association, is a B2B buyer-seller meet that seeks to provide “an ideal forum for local companies and MNCs to reach out the global market.” “Around 80 garment manufacturers from South India have set up stalls and we expect around 2,000 retailers to visit the fair,” said one of the organisers. The fair is expected to generate new business worth Rs 100 crore.
