Climate & Weather States - Andhra Pradesh Earth Institute mounts pitch for global warming projects in AP
Our Bureau Hyderabad, Aug 8 The US-based Earth Institute is interested in undertaking projects in Andhra Pradesh to look at global warming and its implications to the world. A feasibility or pilot project regarding capture and storage of carbon, which is considered the main cause for global warming would be interesting, said its Director, Dr Jeffrey Sachs. Prof Sachs and his team made a detailed presentation on the development of low-carbon energy from coal through the techniques of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) to the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, at the State Secretariat. Stating that CCS technology was helpful for coal power plants in the future, he said the Institute was keen to identify suitable coal-based power plants in AP where the technology could be used at no cost to the State, Prof Sachs said. Suitable donors for the project would be identified, he added. Showing interest in the proposals, Dr Reddy urged officials to take forward the project and coordinate with the Columbia University-basedEarth Institute. According to a statement, the Chief Minister also expressed concern over the pollution caused by emission of carbon. He assured the visiting team that efforts were being made to tackle environmental issues in the State. There are several ways of capturing and storing carbon – such as injection into the ocean , underground injection used for enhanced oil recovery and underground storage. A more permanent method of carbon dioxide disposal is through neutralisation in carbonate form itself. This is done by injecting it into alkaline rich layers of the Earth. When exposed to alkaline minerals, carbon dioxide gas will react to form carbonates or bicarbonates, which are less harmful to the environment.
