Thiruvananthapuram, Aug. 8 The Kerala Cabinet has approved the proposal for reopening Travancore Rayons Ltd at Perumbavoor with the help of private sector. The company has been lying closed for the past six years.

The Chief Minister, Mr V.S. Achuthanandan, told newspersons after the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday that as per the agreement reached with the private party, the existing employees of the company would be retained in the new setup.

He said that the Cabinet also decided to declare Wayanad as a calamity-hit district for the purpose of accelerating flood relief works there. The decision was taken on the basis of the recommendation of the State Agricultural Debt Relief Commission.

The Chief Minister said that an amount of Rs 50 crore had been allocated for taking up repair works on the roads that were damaged in the monsoon rains. The repair works would be completed within a month, he added.

The Cabinet decided to set up a revolving fund of Rs 20 crore to facilitate supply of essential commodities at prices lower than the market rates through the outlets of Civil Supplies Corporation and the Kerala State Cooperative Consumers’ Federation (Consumerfed). Also, steps would be initiated to keep the prices of essential commodities under check during the ensuing Onam festival season.

The second phase of the people’s planning programme in the State will be inaugurated on August 17. A national conference of the local administration ministers of various States will be held as part of the function.

The Chief Minister said that the second phase of the programme would be implemented after filling the shortcomings noticed in the first phase. The Government would ensure that there was no room for complaints in the second phase, he added.
