Fishermen to rally against CZM today

Our Bureau

Visakhapatnam, Aug. 8 The National Fishworkers’ Forum is organising a nationwide protest against the Coastal Zonal Management (CZM) notification on Thursday, as it causes destruction of coastal lands, environment, fisheries and natural resources.

The decision was taken at a national meet organised in Chennai by the forum in view of renewed efforts by the Ministry of Environment and Forests to do away with the Coastal Regulatory Zone (CRZ) notification, 1991, and replace it with the CZM notification.

In a press release issued here, Mr Harekrishna Debnath, Chairperson of the union, said the coastal communities would defend their lands, environment and resources, and they would not allow the CZM notification to be implemented.

Representations

Mr Debnath said that numerous representations had been sent to the Prime Minister, the Minister for Environment and Forests, the Minister for Agriculture, the Secretary of the Environment and Forests and also the Chief Ministers of the coastal States, demanding a halt to the notification.

He said the CRZ notification, 1991, should be implemented in right earnest to protect the coastal environment and the livelihood of traditional fishermen from different kinds of onslaughts in the name of development.

Mr Debnath said the indifferent attitude of the Government had necessitated the protest.

Rallies would be held here, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam on Thursday as a part of the national campaign, said Ms K. Lakshmi, Secretary of the Fishworkers’ Union.
