AP to counter NSAI threat to move court

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, Aug. 9

The Andhra Pradesh Government has decided to file a caveat (an appeal with court requesting it not to proceed with a case without its notice) to pre-empt National Seed Association of India (NSAI) from approaching the court on the June Ordinance that sought to control the cottonseed activity.

This is in response to reported move by the NSAI to contest the AP Cottonseeds (Regulation of Supply, Distribution and Fixation of sale price) 2007 Ordinance issued in June.

Discussing the issue with senior officials of the Ministry here on Tuesday, the State Agriculture Minister, Mr N. Raghuveera Reddy, felt that some vested interests were trying to scuttle Government efforts to protect the interests of cotton farmers.

The Ordinance was promulgated following removal of cotton from the Essential Commodities Act by the Centre. The Ordinance invoked clauses in Environmental Protection Act to retain control on the cottonseed activity.

Stating that the Ordinance contradicted the Centre’s move, NSAI had announced that it would move the court.
