Tea Volume of tea on offer at Coonoor rises
P.S. Sundar Coonoor, Aug 8 A sudden spurt in catalogues has increased the offer for the Sale No: 32 of the auctions of the Coonoor tea trade Association (CTTA) to be held tomorrow and Friday. A volume of 11.82 lakh kg has been catalogued, marking an increase of 1.1 lakh kg over the offer of last week. This is 1.5 lakh kg more than the offer in the corresponding sale of last year. Substantial fresh arrivals as also the inclusion of the unsold teas of the previous auctions have inflated the catalogue. Leaf, dust offer
Of the 11.82 lakh kg on offer now, as much as 8.73 lakh kg belongs to the leaf grades and 3.09 lakh kg to dust grades. Again, as much as 10.97 lakh kg belongs to the CTC variety and only 0.85 lakh kg to the orthodox variety. The proportion of orthodox continues to be low in both leaf and dust grades. Within the leaf catalogues, only 0.38 lakh kg belongs to the orthodox variety and as much as 8.35 lakh kg to the CTC variety. In the dust category, only 0.47 lakh kg belongs to orthodox, while CTC totals 2.62 lakh kg. The increased offer can upset prices if the demand fails to rise proportionately. Last week, prices slid to a new low of Rs 31 a kg – the lowest so far in 2007.
