It is indeed heartening that ITC, one of the corporate giants, is going the organic way (Business Line, July 18). The time has come to introduce organic manure wherever possible instead of chemical fertilisers for the healthy growth of plants and sustainability of the soil, and to provide consumers 100 per cent natural food.

There is vast scope for developing organic manure at low cost and promoting it widely both in urban and rural areas. Most of the urban solid waste can be transformed to organic plant nutrients. City parks and kitchen gardens can be treated with this kind of organic manure. And in rural areas organic manure can enter agricultural and horticultural cultivation in a big way.

Currently, the awareness is low and the practice is limited. The Department of Agriculture would do well to make organic fertilisers and pesticides more easily available even in Department outlets.
