Infosys gets nod for SEZ proposals

Reliance project validity extended

So far formal approvals have been granted for setting up of 362 SEZs, out of which 136 have been notified.

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Aug 8

The Board of Approval of Special Economic Zones (SEZs) on Wednesday gave four formal approvals and two in-principle approvals for setting up of SEZs. The four formal approvals included the two IT/ITES zones proposed by Infosys Technologies at Rangareddy district in Andhra Pradesh.

The other two formal approvals basically related to conversion of the existing in-principle approvals to formal approvals. These are the IT/ITES SEZ by Genpact India at Rajasthan and IT/ITES SEZ by Enfield Infrastructure Ltd in West Bengal.

8 applications

In all, the BOA meeting considered eight applications for setting up of SEZs. While the BOA gave four formal approvals and 2 in-principle approvals, two proposals (Adarsh Prime Projects and Blue Vision Construction) were deferred.

The two proposals for which in-principle approvals were given are the multi-product SEZs by Ispat Industries Ltd in Maharashtra and the Biotech SEZ by Veritas Infrastructure Development Ltd in Maharashtra.

Addressing the Board of Approval members here today, the Chairman of the Board, Mr G.K. Pillai, said that so far formal approvals have been granted for setting up of 362 SEZs, out of which 136 have been notified. He said that over Rs 45,377 crore have been invested in these notified SEZs and that these are providing direct employment to over 38,405 persons.

More proposals

Another nine proposals are expected to be taken up for clearance at the next BOA meeting slated for August 30.

Meanwhile, in a separate development, the Commerce Ministry has extended the validity of the Reliance Industries’ Maha Mumbai SEZ.

“The extension to in-principle clearance to Maha Mumbai SEZ was done by the Ministry itself”, the Commerce Secretary, Mr Pillai, told reporters here.
