Ban on plastic items from Sept 1 in Kerala

Our Bureau

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug. 9

The Kerala Government will strictly enforce the ban on plastic items such as carry bags, glasses and cups from September 1.

The decision, taken by a high-level committee, comes in the context of serious threat posed by piling garbage to public health in the State.

The Local Administration Minister, Mr Paloli Mohammed Kutty, said that the licences of hotels, which supply food items in plastic carry bags, would be cancelled from September 1. Apart from plastic cups and glasses, the use of plastic leaves for serving food at parties, including those at clubs and marriage halls, would also come under the purview of the ban, he said.

Waste processing

The meeting decided to effect changes in the waste disposal rules so as to ensure maximum punishment to individuals and institutions found lax in waste processing. Hotels, marriage halls and hospitals should make their own arrangements for processing of wastes. Licences of these institutions would be cancelled if they failed in the task.

Control on use of plastic items will be enforced in schools, colleges and hostels.
