N-E crafts fair aims to widen market

Mangalore, Aug. 8 In its effort to widen the market for handicrafts of North-Eastern States and to improve the product range, the North-Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation has organised a North-East Crafts Fair in Mangalore.

Nearly 50 craftsmen from Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura will exhibit traditional handicraft and handloom items of the region till August 22.

Speaking to newspersons at the inauguration of the exhibition on Wednesday, Mr D.C. Borkotoky, Deputy General Manager (Marketing), North-Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation, said that the objective of the exhibition was to promote the sales of handicrafts the region and to expose craftsmen to the market.

He added that the effort of the corporation and support extended by the office of the Development Commissioner for Handicrafts under the Union Ministry of Textiles have helped in revitalising handicrafts and handloom sector of the region and in reorienting the designs to suit present-day requirements without losing the traditional base.

“The product development and widening the market opportunities have given a new vision and hope to the craftsmen and weavers of the North-East. The exhibition is an effort in that direction.”
