Farm initiatives from S&T Ministry

The Union Minister of Science and Technology, Mr Kapil Sibal, on Thursday said that the Ministry has planned several steps including a working paper to rejuvenate the tea industry in North India and the Web-based information on agriculture that could enhance the productivity and profitability of the agriculture sector.

“A comprehensive agro-information portal, to be available in several local languages would be operational by December 2007,” said Mr Sibal adding that a real time crop health and productivity assessment and management platform would be proliferated nationally by December.

Horticulture

The Ministries of Science and Technology (S&T), and Earth Sciences (ES) also plan to have a horticulture planting material mission for the North-East region by December.

Potash report

Additionally, the Ministry would conduct a feasibility study of mounting ‘potash’ from sea-water mission by December.

A working paper and plan on potential to rejuvenate tea industry in North India to be prepared by October.

A task force reporting to the Minister S&T and ES has been set up for the two Ministries with Secretary DST as Chairperson to facilitate and periodically monitor the programmes identified.

Both the Ministries are headed by Mr Kapil Sibal.
