Chemicals States - West Bengal Mott MacDonald to identify site for chemical hub
Our Bureau Kolkata, Aug. 9 The West Bengal Government has engaged global management, engineering and development consultancy firm Mott MacDonald to identify new sites in the State where the proposed chemicals hub of the Indonesian conglomerate Salim Group can be located. This follows the State Government’s decision not to set up the proposed chemicals hub at Nandigram in East Midnapore district. The exercise is expected to be completed within the next few weeks and the Salim Group will be offered a new site for the proposed project within the next one month, Mr Nirupam Sen, West Bengal’s Minister for Industries and Commerce, told newspersons here on Thursday after representatives of the Salim Group met him and the West Bengal Chief Minister, Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee. Mr Benny Santoso, Chief Executive of the Salim Group, and Mr Prasoon Mukherjee, local partner of the Salim Group, were among those present at the meeting. The progress of all projects being implemented — and proposed to be set up — by the Salim Group in West Bengal were discussed at the meeting. These included the multi-purpose Special Economic Zone, the Mahabharat Motor Cycle project, the IT and logistics hubs, etc. Mr Sen said the State Government had already written to all political parties on the proposed chemicals hub with a view to arriving at a consensus with regard to its proposed location. A special committee will soon be formed to advise on the proposed project, whose environmental aspects would also be looked into. Speaking to newspersons after the meeting, Mr Mukherjee said “the Government has said clearly and we have clearly accepted that the chemical hub will not come up at Nandigram”.
